Let me say a word about driving guides. They can be expensive, but they are also a wise expenditure if maximizing the impact of your time is important. I would not use these guides for everyday sight seeing, but they are invaluable for areas of specific interest. For instance since one of our number had never been to Italy, we elected to hire a guide with a car for a day of touring the ancient Roman sites, the Vatican museum and the Sistine Chapel.
